What.

In my future sustainable city is no waste. The city is very green, everywhere you go you will see trees and flowers. The air is very clean and all the people are healthy. We only use sustainable energy. The oceans are clean; the fish won't choke in plastic anymore. All the waste will be recycled and we will make houses, things, food and clothes from it. Waste isn't a big deal anymore. We won't have a big dump; the streets are clean. So what are we going to do with all that waste that we now have in our world?

Where.

The advertising agency Fitzroy is making rum bottles from washed- up plastic from the North Sea. They call it: "From waste to wasted". People drinks lots of rum and in return, the ocean will be cleaned. The reason for this concept is that they think that liquor labels are doing less with sustainability. So in collaboration with Jut een Product, which is a company that reuses washed- up plastic, they made this rum bottles. The cap of the bottle is made from Coca- Cola labels because earlier this year a whole container with these labels landed in the sea. The bottle itself is from washed- up glasses

. At home, you can also reuse it as a water bottle. This concept is a good solution for the plastic waste in oceans. (Heesakkers, 2017)

In addition, an Ice cream maker named Salt & Straw in Portland is making ice cream from food waste. They use apples which aren't sold in the supermarket and herbs that remain after use. The reason behind this concept is that there is a huge problem: Food waste. In the United States, 40% of the food is wasted. Salt & Straw want that people see that they don't have to throw away food if you can eat it. (Thijssen, Duurzaam Bedrijfsleven , 2017)

But waste will also be used for houses. Philip Troost and Dilip de Gruijter from Stadgas and Green collect are working together to warm up houses with biological gas. This biological gas is made from waste. So now the two men are collecting so much waste that they can warm up a house or an office. The reason why this concept is made is because we are running out of normal gas. An advantage of this gas is that it's sustainable. That's what we need in our future sustainable city. (Kolk, 2017)

Not only food, things, and houses will be made of waste, also clothes are going to be made from trash. Timberland presented new clothes- and shoe collection made of plastic bottles. These plastic bottles are trash from the streets and rivers in Haiti. The sustainable shoes and t- shirts are made from Thread – fabric. The American company thread collects this plastic thrash and they do that together with the local population of Haiti. The collection also shows their customers, the journey of the shoes or clothes. In the future city, more companies will make clothes and shoes from thrash. (Thijssen, Duurzaam Bedrijfsleven, 2017)

Why.

In the Western world, we are producing more waste than less prosperous areas. We transport waste to these areas because the process is cheap and materials have value when they are recycled there. This is a good thing for the less prosperous areas because they can build an economy from this process. You call it e- waste. But some of these methods are bad for the environment. (Erich, 2014)

In the Netherlands, we have between 300 and 900 Kg waste per municipality. This is very much and it has to decrease. These are numbers from the year 2014. (Statistiek, CBS, 2015) Then you also have business waste. This is 25, 056 kg in general. This is also too much. ( (Statistiek, CBS, 2016)

When.

My future sustainable city has no waste. Every little piece of waste is used to make something new. It can be everything: food, houses, clothes, furniture and things. Like I said, the air is clean and the people are healthy. The houses are made of flowers, trees and plants. We aren't driving cars anymore, but we are going on a fast, green bicycle. We also have big houses on the sea, made of plastic trash. The whole city is green and you will only see nature. All the people are nice and respect each other. I believe that in the future, maybe in fifty years, the world is much cleaner. But we have to cooperate. Only together we can make a better and cleaner world.
